This past fiscal year we operated the Elephant's Trunk Thrift Shop, the hospital's Korner Gift Shoppe and the Lifeline Medical Alert service, and
we also sponsored and conducted numerous special events and fund-raisers within the Venice community. Profits from these activities were returned to the community in the form of scholarships, grants and donations. For the fiscal year we paid out a record $234,468. Since its inception the HVV has made grants and donations to the Venice community totaling $8.3 million.
The Hospital Volunteers of Venice began operations in 1951 as an auxiliary arm of what is now Venice Regional Bayfront Health.
Its' earliest members were active and interested women, many of them the wives of physicians or local businessmen. Over the years the HVV grew in numbers and impact as it assumed increasing responsibility in serving the hospital's staff, patients and families in the local community. Now the HVV has over 600 men and women in its corps of volunteers, the highest ratio of volunteers to hospital beds in greater Southwest Florida.
